While music is a cause of tinnitus, this specially altered forms of a patients favorite song can actually help lessen the severity of it. Doctors working on the case have removed the frequencies as the sounds made by tinnitus, and so far doctors think it may have long term relief! Out of the people tested, 6 months after beginning the treatment of listening to this altered music, they say that the treatment significantly altered the loudness in the noises caused by tinnitus. By altering the music and cutting out the frequencies, the treatment is actually causing the brain to reorganize how the noise is heard. The frequencies that are cut out are close to an octave around the tinnitus noise. Meanwhile, patients being treated with placebos to see the effect showed no changes in severity. After more in depth study of how the brain reorganized, it may in fact have caused the brain to permanently lessen the severity of tinnitus.
